Saving Snow Leopard in the Himalayas

The endangered Snow Leopard is found in the Himalayas and Central Asia. There are estimated 4,500-7,500 snow leopards in the wild. In Nepal there are about 300-500 Snow Leopards scattered across the remote, northern mountains. Their survival is threatened by habitat degradation, loss of natural prey, poaching, retaliatory killing by villagers and inadequate national level policies and conservation initiatives.

Musk deer are small members of the deer family with a head-to-body length of 86-100 cm and a weight of 13-18 kg. They are solitary animals and are especially active at night-time. They are recognisable by their distinctive jumping movement - more like the steps of a kangaroo than a deer. Musk deer do not have antlers. Rather they have elongated upper canine teeth, which in males can be up to 10cm long and protrude beneath the upper lip.

The Bengal tiger is the most numerous of tigers existing in the wild today. It is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar and Nepal. India is home to the largest population. It mostly inhabits the dry and wet deciduous forests of central and south India, the Terai-Duar grassland and sal forests of the Himalayan foothills, and the temperate forests of Bhutan. The mangroves of the Sunderban (shared between Bangladesh and India) are the only mangrove forests where tigers are found.

The Asian elephant is the largest terrestrial mammal in Asia. It is smaller than the African elephant (Loxodonta africana), with relatively smaller ears, and the head (not the shoulder) is the highest part of the body.
